9 Mistakes When Buying Crystal Tumbles

POST 9 Mistakes People Make Buying Crystals

This is a video I created on the 9 mistakes people make when buying crystal tumbles. This is especially when just starting out on their spiritual path.

It came about from personal and customer discussions when we wondered if all those crystal tumbles were worth it?

There are some good reasons to buy them which I have also listed although I will do a fuller video on this later.

So whether you’re just getting into crystals or already have a growing collection, this video will help you shop more mindfully and deepen your crystal connection.

Transcript – The 9 Mistakes People Make When Buying Crystal Tumbles

Hi there and welcome back!

This video started out as a reflection on a common regret I’ve seen among many folks—especially those of us who dove headfirst into the world of crystal tumbles when we were just getting started

and that is …

Why did we buy tumbles as we never seem to use them anymore?”

But as I kept writing, it evolved into something broader. So now, I’m excited to share with you: “The 9 Mistakes People Make When Buying Crystal Tumbles.”

I’m Shamarah, and I’ve been selling crystals to geologists and spiritual seekers for over 20 years.

I’ve seen a lot and heard a lot of stories—and I’m here to help you avoid some of the pitfalls that can trip up new buyers.

Whether you’re drawn to crystals for their metaphysical magic or geological beauty, this video is for you. And when I say “shop,” I’m talking about buying in person, at markets, or online.

Let’s jump into the most common mistakes and how you can steer clear of them.

  1. Buying Without Doing Research

It’s easy to fall in love with a pretty stone—but before you buy, take a moment to ask: What do I want this crystal to do?

Look into its properties, meanings, uses, and how to care for it. You can do this research beforehand or while browsing, especially if the shop has helpful information on display.

Without this step, you might walk away with a crystal that doesn’t do what you hoped.

  1. Not Researching the Seller

The world of crystals includes both incredible and… not-so-reliable sellers. Some knowingly sell low-quality even synthetic or man-made stones under misleading names to confuse the customer.

So check reviews, get recommendations, or ask the seller questions.

If it’s a $4 tumble, you might just trust your gut—but a little caution goes a long way.

  1. Choosing Based on Looks Alone

It’s totally normal to be drawn to gorgeous, brightly coloured stones—but don’t let appearances be your only guide.

Ask yourself:

  • Is this stone real?
  • Is it energetically right for me?

It’s easy to get swept up and overbuy in the excitement of the crystal journey.

  1. Falling for Misleading Labels

This one’s tricky—even experienced buyers get caught out. Some sellers mislabel stones, sometimes out of ignorance, but sometimes deliberately.

If a shop has lots of incorrectly named stones and they’ve been in the game for a while… that’s a red flag to you.

Especially watch out for synthetic, dyed, or reconstituted stones marketed as “real.”

Labels like “Smelt Crystal” often hint at man-made materials and to be honest – I appreciate a seller that says this.

If the energy feels off or the geological properties don’t match what you expect—that could be why.

  1. Overpaying

Tumbles are usually affordable, but it’s still worth checking prices.

Larger or rarer stones can vary significantly in price.

Some questions to ask yourself are:

  • Is this its natural colour?
  • Is it dyed or altered?
  • Is this $3 stone at this shop the same quality and size as the $7 one I saw somewhere else?

Also, remember that some shops charge more because of:

  • the locality stone came from,
  • their service quality – staff and their free “add ins”, and
  • their overhead costs for example their shop’s rent for the city location.
  • Others may inflate prices because you seem to be a “captive audience”.
    • I was told stories of this from customers who had bought previously at Hotels and Chinese Healing Centres and discovered they had been seriously overcharged!
  1. Letting Excitement Drive the Purchase

We’ve all done it—bought something just because it looked cool or felt exciting in the moment.

But is it on your researched list? Is it right for you?

Trends and recommendations from friends and celebrities can be fun, but make sure the stone aligns with your own needs.

  1. Buying in Bulk Just Because It’s Cheaper

It’s tempting to grab that 10-for-the-price-of-5 deal—but do you really need that many?

Unless you have a specific purpose (like gridding, gifting to multiple people, or putting them in an art project), it might just lead to unused stones piling up.

  1. Forgetting the Bigger Picture—Should You Be Buying Tumbles at All?

This was the original seed of the video: Why are you buying tumbles in the first place?

Valid reasons include:

  • You’re just getting started and want to test a few stones affordably.
  • You love wearing them in your pocket or can put them in a basket necklace to wear as a pendant.
  • The crystal only comes in tumble form (like shattuckite or petalite).
  • You’re using them for a larger project as I said like handing them out for the meditation in a yoga group!

But if you’re just trying to collect as many crystal as possible for the least money—you might want to rethink that.

I—and many long-time collectors—have drawers full of forgotten tumbles we never use. Why? Because they’re small with small energy, easy to overlook, and not very engaging to look.

Compare them to a striking cluster, a sphere, or lovely pendant that looks great to wear and you can see long-term, they don’t stand a chance of reminding you to use them.

So maybe instead of 10 tumbles, you buy one beautiful bracelet, or a special piece that really stands out. You’ll treasure it for much longer.

      9. Err not being able to count how many mistakes there are!

To Wrap Up:

To make the most of your tumble-buying journey:

  • Do your research.
  • Be mindful of sellers and labels.
  • Compare prices and check quality.
  • Choose with intention, not impulse.
  • And consider if a different form of crystal might serve you better.

These small steps can make a big difference in how you connect and therefore use with your stones.

Thanks so much for watching! If this helped you, I’d love if you’d subscribe for more crystal tips and metaphysical insights. Also leave a comment and share if you feel called to—and keep connecting with your beautiful crystal allies.
