Special Notes
  • Generally Agate and Chalcedony are pretty much interchangeable names in the metaphysical and jewellery shops.
  • Agate is usually found in volcanic rock often with quartz or amethyst growing into the cavity of the nodule.
  • Red Agate is also called Carnelian.
  • Onyx is Black Agate or Black + White stripped Agate.
    • However waxy feeling stones called "Onyx" from Pakistan and Mexico (often in banded greens, yellows &/or tans) are Calcite and not Onyx!
  • Bloodstone:
    • "Classic" bloodstone is dark green or dark green-blue with red spots or blotches,
      • representing green chalcedony with red inclusions of iron oxide or red jasper.
    • There is also a grey chalcedony with red spots version.
    • Plasma Bloodstone is if colours are yellow spots and blotches against green chalcedony
  • Sardonyx is
    • If colours are red + brown and/or black
    • i.e. chalcedony layered with sard. Or rather combination of onyx and sard, better known variety has red sard.
  • Fancy Jasper or Fancy Agate is if colours are purple variations with green, brown, tan and from India. Alternate name is Seftonite.
  • Most strong blue, pink, green or purple agates, as in slices, jewellery and book-ends is actually coloured/dyed - they look too unnatural in colour so easy to identify.
    • Only the blue colour survives the sun's rays. All other colours tend to fade.
    • Why colour? Most agate is an unattractive grey-tan colour which is difficult to sell. Bright colours do better.
  • Most commercial green or blue onyx jewellery is dyed/coloured chalcedony.
  • Most black onyx jewellery is dyed to enhance black.
  • Agate geodes can be mistaken for Thunder Eggs.
