Geological Information of Seraphinite
- Its name comes from the patterning that looks like angel wings, that changes sparkle and light as you view it from different positions.
General Identification
- Group: Chlorite, Clinochlore
- Category: Phyllosilicates
- Formula: (repeating unit) (Mg,Fe) 3(Si,Al) 4O 10(OH) 2·(Mg,Fe) 3(OH) 6
- Crystal system: Monoclinic with some triclinic polymorphs.
- Crystal habit Foliated masses, scaley aggregates, disseminated flakes.
- Mohs scale: 2–2.5
- Luster: Vitreous, pearly, dull, chatoyancy
- Colour: Various shades of green; rarely yellow, red, or white.
- Seraphinite is only green
Special Notes
- It is generally dark green to grey in colour and has chatoyancy.
- Seraphinite is the gem quality of Clinochlore.
- Name came from the Greek word for inclined and green since its structure is monoclinic and its colour is green.
- Its silvery, chatoyancy fibres are much like charoite's.
- Comes from a mine "Korshunovskaia" situated not far from Baikal Lake in eastern Siberia, Russia. However this mine has run out and adjacent iron ore mine owners will not permit further exploration. Stock still be sold is old reserves or from the occasional person who sneaks in.
- One supplier was selling black seraphinite.
- Further investigation revealed that it is in fact a new find of golden mica from Brazil.
