These are Labradorite Hearts in the most popular size and are really well shaped. Each of them show flashes of rainbow colours which is a little tricky to see in the photos!

  • So to see the video where I caught them better (although a lot of wind and cloud!) – click here.

The black inclusions are natural as they are for rainbow moonstone and I suspect that they are the reason for the flashes of colour!

Larvikite
  • is an igneous rock from Norway with little bits of "labradorescence" silver-blue schiller effect to it.
  • It is not labradorite (a mineral). It has olivine, apatite, quartz, titanium, titanaugite and/or titanomagnetite present.
Special Notes
  • One version of moonstone is actually white labradorite.
  • Spectrolite is considered "A" grade Labradorite and comes from Finland where the blacker feldspar displats the rainbow of colours better than that from Madagascar.
  • Named from where it was found originally - Labrador, Canada but found in other locations.
  • It's unusual properties coined the termed "labradorescence".
  • Its use is in jewellery and decorative objects.
  • Yellow Labradorite looks like Citrine with no labradorescence.
    • Mineralogically it is called Bytownite although some say they are different however I cannot find any reference to golden labradorite in mineralogy databases.
  • If Ca is zero it is albite or bytownite. If it is no Na it is anorthite.
    • Labradorite also usually has both in its makeup.
