Geological Information

Geological Information of Pyrite

• More correctly termed Iron Pyrite.
• Its metallic luster and brass-yellow hue have earned it the nickname "Fool's Gold" because of its resemblance to gold.

General Identification

• Type: Mineral
• Category: Sulfides, Metal
• Formula: FeS₂
• Crystal system: Isometric
• Crystal habit: Cubic, faces may be striated, but also frequently octahedral and pyritohedron. Often inter-grown, massive, radiated, granular, globular, and stalactitic.
• Mohs scale (hardness): 6–6.5
• Diaphaneity: Opaque
• Colour: Pale brass-yellow reflective; tarnishes darker and iridescent

Pyrite Cubes

• Most common form of pyrite structure.
• Mostly found Spain and Peru.
• Peru also has octahedrons and "soccer balls" (dodecahedral) but uncommon and rare respectively, to find

Pyrite Sun

• Some speculate it is pyrite after a marine animal. Others believe it is a pyrite crystal attempting to grow in a very confined space - a crack in slate.
• Specimens from Utah and Mexico.

Pyrite Ball, Pyrite Nodule

• Half a nodule:
• Found in China and

Pyrite after Ammonite

• If pyrite has mineralised through a sea animal thereby part of its fossilisation.
• Specimens from Russia.

Special Notes

• Pyrite enjoyed popularity in the 16th and 17th centuries as a source of ignition in early firearms.
• Pyrite remains in commercial use for the production of sulfur dioxide, for use in such applications as the paper industry.
• Varieties:
  • Marcasite (white iron pyrite)
    • "is iron sulfide (FeS₂) with orthorhombic crystal structure. It is physically and crystallographically distinct from pyrite, which is iron sulfide with cubic crystal structure...Marcasite is lighter and more brittle than pyrite. Specimens of marcasite often crumble and break up due to the unstable crystal structure." wikipedia
  • Cattierite (Co S₂) and Vaesite (Ni S₂) are similar in their structure and belong also to the pyrite group.
  • Bravoite is a nickel-cobalt bearing variety of pyrite, with > 50% substitution of Ni²⁺ for Fe²⁺ within pyrite.
• Help you see the geometries that crystals in their purest opportunity to grow and shape towards - ball, square, octahedron, even soccer ball!
  • Metals are crystals, and all crystals (geological definition) grown because they have one of the metals in their recipe.
