There are four versions of "moonstone" if it relates to the shimmer

White Labradorite - White with black

  • Desired quality - is to have blue opal-like flashes in the white.
  • Indian version often has blue-green crystals which are aquamarine.

Adularia

  • used in high quality jewellery - often quite clear with rainbows of flashes.
  • Can be mistaken for synthetic opalite.

Feldspar moonstone

  • cream, peach, or grey colour with shimmer rather than flash
  • high quality peach version actually is known as sunstone - and not considered moonstone geologically.

Plagioclase feldspars peristerite

  • albite variety Na(AlSi3O8)
  • This may also be part of a granite called larvikite and labradorite (albite : anorthite combo (Ca,Na)[Al(Al,Si)Si2O8]), which also exhibit iridescence
  • but there is some disagreement geologically.
