Introduction
Hello! I’m Shamarah, and today I want to chat with you about one of the most ancient and effective ways to cleanse your crystals—smudging. This method uses the smoke from burning leaves or bark to purify and rebalance the energy within your crystals.
What Is Smudging?
Smudging involves burning plant material like leaves or bark to release smoke, which has long been known for its purification properties. We don’t burn the crystals themselves (of course!)—instead, we allow the smoke to do the energetic cleansing.

Choosing Your Smudge
White sage is the most popular herb used, particularly in Australia, due to its availability and affordability. However, other effective plants include:

Juniper

Eucalyptus
-
Sweetgrass
-
Cedar
-
Palo Santo
I’ve spoken with Aboriginal Elders who supported my use of local plants like eucalyptus. That said, it’s important to source your smudging herbs ethically and sustainably, and always trust your intuition about what feels right to use.
Tip: If you’re uncertain about using a particular smudge, don’t use it—your worry could transfer to the crystal during cleansing.

When Not to Smudge
Smudging isn’t for everyone. You should avoid it if:

You have nasal, lung, or eye sensitivities

You have small children nearby

You or others in your household suffer from conditions like asthma
The smell can linger and may still irritate sensitive people—even with good ventilation. If in doubt, try smudge spraysor do it outdoors or by an open window.
Always check for fire bans and have water on hand—never compromise safety.

A fireproof container (like an abalone shell or ceramic bowl)

A feather or fan (optional)

A long-neck lighter or safety match
How to Smudge Crystals

Light your smudge leaves and let them catch briefly before blowing out the flame—allowing them to smolder.

Hold your crystal in the smoke.

Ask it to release stale or negative energies.

Move the smoke around using your hand, a fan, or feather.

Tune into how long feels right—it varies from crystal to crystal.

Safely extinguish your smudge after use. I prefer water, but know that it may cause mold on remaining leaves.
Moon Cycles & Smudging
While crystals don’t need a moon phase to be cleansed, you might. Using the moon’s energy can help with intention setting and spiritual connection.

New Moon & Waxing Moon
Best for intentions involving new beginnings, growth, and manifestation. -
Full Moon & Waning Moon
Ideal for releasing, letting go, and spiritual recharging.
But again—don’t delay cleansing a dirty crystal just to wait for a moon phase!
