Amber

• Much of the amber around is either resin, or resin with a sprig of amber inside - it is more correctly called synthetic amber or amberlite - see Special Notes below for how to detect.
• Amber is often heat treated to improve clarity but it bursts air bubbles which form disks.
• Order of development: tree sap  >  copal  >  amber
  •  often showing bits of dirt, bark, seed, leaf and/or insects that were trapped as the tree sap ran over them while tree was alive or dying.
• Best known locations: Countries around the Baltic Sea e.g. Lithuania. Also Paraguay. Dominica Republic - blue amber,
• Colour mainly comes from the colour of the tree sap.

Jet (Black Amber, Lignite)

• Derived from decaying wood under extreme pressure - commonly the wood of trees of the family Araucariaceae.
• Jet is either black or dark brown, but may contain pyrite inclusions.

Special Notes

• Amberlite can be determined by the following:
  • is formed into geometrics pyramids, spheres etc - too expensive to do this with the real thing;
  • has a very light plastic feel; and
  • is a cheap price.
  • Amberlite is said to have shavings of amber within it.
• Copal is more easily determined as being "softer" than amber when you can compare pieces - else you have to trust seller.
  • is more delicate so easier to break
  • can be burned to cleanse the room of negativity
  • is often heated treated to turn it to amber
  • some sellers argue Columbian Amber is copal but scientifically it is not true.
