Australian Petrified Wood

This is a Petrified Wood showing a lovely combination of semi-polished. It comes from NSW, Australia! It is polished on one side and cleaned on the other to show the fossil bark. Prospectors do have fun with making the rough pieces look lovely.

Fossilised wood is where the replacement of the wood is by chalcedony.

This piece was somewhat polished just by the slicer machine. However as my lapidary club doesn’t have a proper slice polishing machine, I decided to use bees wax to improve the look. I did not want to do varnish that many others do. So overtime, you will want to re-polish with bees wax. This has also kept the price down as the labour was not a lot.

• In sunlight it is more red-brown, but inside it’s a dark-brown.
