Geological Information

Geological Information of Jade
  • Term jade is applied to two different metamorphic rocks, Nephrite and Jadeite, that are made up of different silicate minerals.
  • Nephrite jade is a silicate of calcium and magnesium, and jadeite, a silicate of sodium and aluminium.
General Identification
  • Type: Mineral
  • Class: Silicates
  • Crystal System: Monoclinic
Jadeite

  • Colour: Apple-green, emerald-green, bluish green, leek-green, greenish white, white, may show green spots, rarely blue or violet; colorless in thin section. Often also banded.
Nephrite
  • Mohs Hardness: 6-6.5
  • Formula: Ca2(Mg,Fe)5Si8O22(OH)2
  • Crystal Habit: massive
  • Lustre / Diaphaneity: Translucent to opaque and often mottled, dull
  • Colour: Light to dark green, yellow to brown, white, gray, black.
Special Notes
  • New Zealand Greenstone Pounamu has one form that is currently considered a third type of jade.
    • However some websites list as nephrite which I don't agree with as it has a glassy feel like jadeite.
    • Hence why I think it should be a third classification.
    • The other NZ forms are serpentine and bowenite.
  • China has ancient nephrite jade mines but the preferred "more valued" jade is jadeite from Burma.
  • Burmese Jadeite is now extremely hard to get commercially and even tourist buying locally have trouble exporting.
  • Nephrite Jade can be confused by with Serpentine or Bowenite as they may both grow in the same mine (as advised by an Australian miner of both). The distinction needs a microscope.
  • This has encourage deception by sellers and manufacturers:
    • Jadeite is often "enhanced"
    • Many "jades" are not e.g.New Jade and African Jade are not true jade - they are serpentine varieties.
    • Many in Australia sell green aventurine as jade. And Australia's chrysoprase is now being sold as Australian Jade. Neither are jades.
    • Also chalcedony is often dyed green and called jade.
    • There are a lot of "fakes". Jade will feel waxy similar to calcite's feel. This website has spent some time finding them: http://molly.kalafut.org/jade/fake.html
  • Nephrite Jades are fairly easy to get depending on the colour.
